Hungarian-Style Breaded Cheese Sticks (Rántott Sajt)
Ingredients
500 g semi-hard cheese (Edam, Gouda, or Trappist cheese)
100 g all-purpose flour
2 eggs
150 g breadcrumbs
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Oil, for frying
Instructions
Prepare the cheese: Cut the cheese into thick sticks, about 2–3 cm wide.
Set up the coating: Put flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another, and breadcrumbs mixed with paprika, salt, and pepper in a third.
Coat the cheese: Dip each cheese stick in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. For a crispier coating, repeat the egg and breadcrumb layers once more.
Chill: Place the coated cheese in the freezer for about 20–30 minutes. This helps prevent the cheese from melting too quickly.
Fry: Heat oil to about 175°C (350°F). Fry the cheese sticks for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
Drain: Remove and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Serving
Serve hot with tartar sauce, garlic sauce, or sour cream, and garnish with fresh parsley.
